Story:

No rest for the weary. After Colonel's dressage test, it was back in the barn to care for him, a quick break for lunch, then out to the cross country course. They were once again the early test, with runs starting at 8 am. Kaity and Jake walked every inch of the course, some areas four and five times so Jake knew exactly how he was going to approach each jump and run inbetween. After a few hours to let Colonel rest, it was once more back in the saddle with Legend at his side to do just a touch of cross country schooling. Honestly, Legend did most of the work: Kaity was giving him a real session, while Colonel only popped over a handful of the lowest jumps and did a lot of walking in between. Anything he was nervous of Legend showed him how to get through first. Their schooling session was soon over and the partners back in the pasture for a little bit.

The next morning dawned over cast, threatening rain. Kaity fretted over the weather more than Jake did: he trusted Colonel's footing. Kaity was just worried about re-injury. They were one of the first pairs on the course anyway, there shouldn't be much mud or slick spots. Colonel was soon suited up, Jake on his back, then Kaity walked the pair out to the course for a short warm up before the ride. Before long they were in the start box then on the course. The course started with a long gallop down a ath lined with trees before opening to the first obstacle: a straight forward, but somewhat scary horseshoe. Colonel didn't even flinch, jumping straight through the curves sides then galloping down the straight before Jake had to pull him up fast: the next jump was set in the curve. Though a simple log, Jake knew some would approach it way too fast or off balance from the curve.

After hopping over it, the path took another sharp turn then came upon a combination of mini "barns", simple white with red roofs. Not difficult really, but quite a spread for the smaller ponies. Jake had to regulate Colonel a little bit harder through this series, the pony was so ready to get through it and onward. They had a little bit of galloping room,, which Colonel took with glee before having to come back. The next jump was a long boat jump: simple in execution, weird and scary for the horses. They didn't have much room after that until they were faced with the orca: this one posed a few problems. It was essentially a skinny, with that dorsal fin, and not the most approachable jump in the world. Still, after steadying Colonel inbetween to drop his speed, he let Colonel find his own way. Three, two, one.. clear. Jake breathed a bit easier, then set his sights on the fence jump coming up. They approached that one a bit fast, but Colonel was all over it, hurdling it like a fox hunter before taking off at a dead gallop. Jake let him: they had a while before the loop. The first jump in the loop was easy: a brightly painted plank or wall. The next two... Colonel was still tugging at the bit as they approached the half moon, and strongly over jumped it, making Jake fear he might hit the top or side of it. Once passed it, he breathed a little bit and gave Colonel a sharper half halt, just in time for the next jump. He made the split second decision to go left. It was a sharper turn, but it could offer some good time make up. The pinto pon rocketted around the turn. Eleven was once again a small fight: Colonel thought it was a simple plank again. Jake knew that there was a lot of depth to this. Colonel wasn't too happy at havng his gallop slowed though, and gave an extra hard jump with a buck upon landing. It ended up working out though: the hard jump got them well clear of the jump, and this time Colonel had a very long gallop to settle back into place.

With Colonel pleased with his run, it was a bit easier to collect him for the exceptionally tall hedge fences. The double was a bit tight, but Colonel navigated it easily, making up for a misjudge on Jake's part. Gritting his teeth, he set Colonel up right for the next jump, another long jump. Colonel cleared it nicely, then took off again. From there on out the jumps were more tightly packed: technical, but not difficult, with scarily designed jumps that weren't a challenge height or depth wise. After the last one, Jake smiled and patted Colonel, grinning from ear to ear as they crossed the finish line.
